Grotte de Niaux

Genuine Stone Age paintings

One of the few caves in the world where you can still see genuine Stone Age paintings. In the Salon Noir, deep inside the mountain, there are more than 70 animals – bison, horses and ibex – painted in charcoal and clay around 14,000–17,000 years ago. You walk 2.5 kilometres in darkness with only hand torches, in groups of no more than 25 people. The tour takes 1 h 45 and must be booked in advance.

TipsBring warm clothes – it is cold inside the cave even in midsummer. Combine with the Parc de la Préhistoire in Tarascon, where the Salon Noir is reproduced at full scale.
