Grotte de Bédeilhac
The cave where a plane landed
A huge cave north of Tarascon with a mouth so large that aircraft have fitted inside. In 1940 the aircraft maker Dewoitine began building a factory in the entrance, and during the occupation the German army used the cave to store and repair Junkers planes. In 1972 the pilot Georges Bonnet landed a small plane inside the cave. Further in there are more than 100 paintings and engravings from the Magdalenian period, the first discovered in 1906.
TipsOpen April–November; the tour takes about 1.5 hours. Warm clothes.
