Condom
The Three Musketeers and Armagnac
The main town of Ténarèze, one of the three Armagnac districts, on the River Baïse. On Place Saint-Pierre, at the foot of the cathedral, stand d'Artagnan and the three musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis in bronze – 2.5 metres tall, made by the Georgian sculptor Zurab Tsereteli and unveiled in 2010. The town lies on the Via Podiensis pilgrim route, and the Armagnac houses in and around town welcome visitors.
TipsThe real musketeers came from Béarn: Athos from Athos-Aspis, Aramis from Aramits and Porthos from Pau – Alexandre Dumas made them heroes. Five kilometres west of Condom lies the fortified medieval village of Larressingle, one of the most beautiful villages in France.
