The Vézère Valley and Lascaux
The valley of prehistory in the Dordogne
Les Eyzies with the National Museum of Prehistory and the Font-de-Gaume cave, and 25 km upstream Montignac with Lascaux IV.
UNESCO World Heritage
Prehistoric Sites and Decorated Caves of the Vézère Valley
- World Heritage since
- 1979
147 prehistoric sites and 25 decorated caves, among them Lascaux with its 17,000-year-old paintings of horses, aurochs and deer. Les Eyzies is known as the ”capital of prehistory”.
Visit: The original Lascaux cave has been closed since 1963. The complete replica Lascaux IV at Montignac is very well done. Font-de-Gaume in Les Eyzies has genuine paintings but few places – book ahead.
