Piau-Engaly

Haute vallée d'Aure (Aragnouet), Hautes-Pyrénées

Piau-Engaly is the highest ski resort in the French Pyrenees, with the village at about 1,850 m and summits around 2,600 m near the Spanish border and the Bielsa tunnel. The high altitude means reliable snow and a long season. The village was built in terraces directly on the slope in 1979–1985 and is car-free, so almost all the accommodation is on the pistes. The blue La Grande Bleue is almost 7 km long, and there are secured freeride zones such as Badet and Lagopède.

TipsThis is where people come when the snow runs short lower down – the altitude often gives the best conditions in the Hautes-Pyrénées. The road up can be tricky in snowfall, so carry chains. Book in advance at n-py.com.
