Mirepoix
A medieval square with half-timbered houses
From the 2014 guide – ThomasA unique square in the middle of the town. The houses are built with oak half-timbering and are hundreds of years old. Market on Thursdays.
The big market is now held on Monday mornings. The arcades around the square have carved beam ends with animal and human faces – look up. A good lunch stop on the way between Foix and Carcassonne.
The history of the Cathars
The lords of Mirepoix were sympathetic to the Cathars – Pierre-Roger de Mirepoix led the defence of Montségur in 1243–1244.
