Ax-les-Thermes

A spa town with fantastic baths

From the 2014 guide – ThomasA pleasant little mountain village at 800 metres, also an old Cathar stronghold. There are lots of thermal baths in the village. One pool, the Bassin des Ladres, was built in the 13th century and is still there today – you can sit with your feet in the warm sulphurous water. A brand-new bathhouse has also been built, absolutely superb and good value too. There's a casino as well.

The water comes up at 77 °C – the hottest springs in the Pyrenees. The Bains du Couloubret has outdoor pools on two levels with mountain views and is open all year round. The footbath at the Bassin des Ladres is free.

Tour de FranceThe climbs to Ax 3 Domaines and the Port de Pailhères start here.
