Collioure
The jewel of the Côte Vermeille
From the Languedoc guide – ThomasSouth of Perpignan, incredibly beautiful, especially Collioure. The Canigou massif rises just above in the Pyrenees.
The fishing village where Matisse and Derain created Fauvism in the summer of 1905. The church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges has a bell tower that was once a lighthouse and stands with its foot in the sea. The Château Royal by the harbour was the summer residence of the kings of Majorca. Follow the Chemin du Fauvisme – some twenty reproductions set up where the artists stood and painted. Try Collioure anchovies and the town's red and sweet wines. Parking is very difficult in summer – use the park-and-ride with shuttle bus. Market on Wednesdays and Sundays.
TipsArrive before 09.30 or after 18.00 in summer.
